I know all of y’all know this song was about home, “Jamaica, Queens” that’s NYC (not the west indies, Jamaica)…and yes, it’s absolutely a Queens, thing baby!
Now, I’ve loved home all of my life but I began to really appreciate our culture in Queens more and more, especially as l traveled away to school and lived in different states and saw how other people lived. It was something so unique about our perspective and culture, I was most proud of. Listening to Tom Browne discuss his inspiration for this hit song makes me ever so proud. See link below.
I still believe growing up in the hip hop era was the best experience ever. There is no place that can compare to New York City, the big apple…especially Queens. Tom Browne shared a very rich experience with Jazz, also coming out of Jamaica, Queens too, which was also home to Legends like, Count Basie & Dizzy Gillespie, etc. Please look it up yourselves on “Youtube” it’s under:“The story behind’ Funkin for Jamaica (NY) ‘ by Tom Browne.” Queens has given so much historic value to Black culture…and it still does.

Chaka Khan heard it and loved it so much, she made a rendition of it. Many still don’t know this hit song, “Funkin for Jamaica” was literally about Jamaica, Queens (NYC) and the unique culture found right there…in Queens, NY. Hopefully, I’ve raised awareness of our culture. The neighborhoods played such a big part in the culture too.

Some of the most powerful people that have influenced me in life included women strung out on crack cocaine. Although, they weren’t family they taught me so much. I’m convinced the yearning to know my own birth mother growing up bestowed on me the ability, to view them simply as women, never as addicts. Seeing only the “soul” of a woman allowed me to have compassion on them…that empathy, in return, gave me support from some very “unlikely” friends. I needed them at that time in my life and although they were broken, they gave me love and support and most of all…They opened their shattered hearts to me. Use wisdom folks, it’s not really “Rocket Science”…discernment.
If she is more invested in shopping, then healing her chakras…that should be a red flag.
If she’s running down to the DR for the fat transfer /BBL but hasn’t gotten any therapy to deal with her trauma of being molested, raped or abandoned…then, those are more red flags. Yes, she can be beautiful, kind and maybe even sweet but she’s not invested in herself, yet…external up keep is a must but what about the internal also? That’s just as important and it is not to be ignored.
If the residue of trauma is still present and not dealt with, expect nothing from her. She is not ready to love anyone until she first loves herself. She must love herself and invoke Self-Love.
Women must heal or we will poison everything and person, we encounter. Look at Society and see the damage women, lacking in self-love has done. Stop worrying about the men and fix you first. WHY? BECAUSE she is, Mother. Goddess. She is a replica of Source…because women are usually the first teachers of a child, the burden lays at our feet. We (mothers) are to empower ourselves. Women are the most magical beings on the planet because of our “womb” and “heart” connection…but if there was trauma in either, there’s a quiet storm brewing within her.
We, as women, must “invest” in our mental health first, to go back and undo, all of that damage, that was done to us…and it was plenty but we still must go do the work on ourselves…
…or we spread that mess like a cancer to our environment. We will spread it to our children and even to our men, as soon, as we’re triggered. No bueno.
Again, I will say, the woman is the most valuable resource on the planet because of her “womb and heart” connection but she doesn’t know it until she first knows and loves herself.
Until she awakens, she’ll remain toxic as hell, tearing up her community, her family, her friends, her lovers, etc. A sewer maiden, raising men that hate us, who reflect back to us…how much we hate ourselvesand other women. She’ll even project her pain, into and onto her own children! She’s dangerous.
Toxic women believe other women are their enemy…but after taking a very close look at my own life and the lineage of all the women in my family, it became clear to see…I was toxic as hell.
